  Coffee Social

The UMW hosted a coffee social on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 10AM in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity United Methodist Church.  We were very honored to have Rev. Cynthia Taylor as our guest speaker.  All women of the church were invited to attend and encouraged to bring a friend for this special event   We also invited the women of Timmonsville UMC and Salem UMC (located in Timmonsville) where Rev. Taylor ministers.  A great time was had by all who attended.

UMW BEGINS 2003 CHRISTMAS PROJECT

Each Year, at Christmas, the United Methodist Women (UMW) of Trinity select a home mission project from the state of South Carolina as a charitable benefactor.  This year the funds collected will go to the Wallace Family Life Center in Wallace, SC (near Bennettsville).  The Wallace Family Center  is one of five home missions sponsored by the South Carolina UMW.  A group of women representing our WMW went to Wallace last month to tour the facility, discuss the programs and assess the needs of the Center with staff.  Christine Hepfer, Susan Derthick, Mary Cunningham, Bee Brown, Laura Ayers, Dottie Parks and Anna Bynum went on the trip.  They found the facility well designed (by our own Danny Shelley!) and well maintained.  The well informed and helpful staff member interviewed has been with the center since its beginning in 1979.

Center Needs Identified

This family center is located in a very rural area with high unemployment.  Most of the people need bus transportation to get to and from the programs offered at Wallace.  They have a mini bus to provide this service; however, the bus takes fuel!  It takes 38 gallons of gasoline to fill it up.  At today’s prices, that’s $50 per tank and they drive many miles.  In this area, as well as other areas of our state and nation, teenage pregnancy is a problem.  The center provides a 3-day retreat at Asbury Hills in the summer where these girls can go and have group meetings to become more informed.  The retreat is called “Friendly Connection.”  The approximate cost of a retreat scholarship is $150 per girl.  In response to these needs, the Trinity UMW members will be donating funds for this project at their November and December meetings.

You Too Can Help!

If you would like to make a donation to help the UMW with this project, please put your gift in an envelope (marked “Wallace” project) made out to Trinity UMW and get it to one of the members listed above or leave at the church office.  Let’s see how many “tanks”  and retreat scholarships we can provide!  You’ll get a good feeling helping out this worthy cause.
